New Cerberon
Capture The Flag / 8 - 12 players / Medium / Intermediate / Industrial / Tech
New Cerberon is a QUAKE LIVE arena designed for Capture The Flag. It is named after the Strogg capital city from the Quake II storyline. Some period of time after Cerberon's destruction and the fall of the Makron, the remaining Strogg soldiers assembled to reconstruct the combat-ravaged city. Contrary to its all-encompassing title, the actual map itself is but a microcosm of New Cerberon's vast industrial facilities, serving as a waste processing plant.
Production first began in response to the then-recent release of GTKRadiant 1.6.3, which was the first editor to include official support for QUAKE LIVE. Looking for potential themes, I opted for a Strogg aesthetic after having been inspired by arenas such as Ferdinand "cityy" List's Left Behind and QUAKE LIVE's remakes of the Quake II maps The Edge and Warehouse. Since the Strogg texture set had yet to be utilized in a map designed for CTF, it became clear what my choice of gametype would be.
The map is somewhat large by (4 vs. 4) CTF standards, with four major areas in each base as well as the ubiquitous central grounds. There are several routes through which attackers can traverse, leaning the map's gameplay balance towards offensive strategies. That doesn't mean one shouldn't attempt to establish a robust defense, however, as teammates can patrol different sections of the base and relay important information to each other regarding the position of enemies.
New Cerberon was one of the first maps posted on the official QUAKE LIVE mapping forums, where it received generous amounts of attention and plaudits from various community members. In 2014, New Cerberon was licensed by id Software for official integration into the game, and was finally released in QUAKE LIVE Premium Pak 21.
